Building futures, not just roads: Roadways at the BIG Futures Show

Roadways marks 60 years this year and we know a thing or two about building paths—but the most important ones lead to people.

It was a privilege to join the BIG Futures Show in Eastbourne, East Sussex’s largest employability, skills and careers event for students with special educational needs and disabilities, and others who may face barriers when exploring future employment.

For us, “the right way” isn’t just about specifications or standards; it’s about making sure everyone feels welcome in our industry.

The aim was simple: to make highways feel more accessible for attendees. Sophie and Alan did an amazing job designing the stand. It was practical, visual and easy to engage with.

Students handled recycled aggregate samples, learned how roads are built and why potholes form, and explored how recycled materials are used in modern road construction to build stronger, longer-lasting roads.

Students were particularly interested in cold bitumen emulsion-based asphalt developed through Roadways depot laboratory and now being used on carriageways and motorways as a binder and base material.

Minecraft-style, CAD and SketchUp-based activities helped connect gaming with practical construction skills.

A self-delivery SME like Roadways appreciates and values neurodiversity to complement many different skills, from site work, plant operation and materials production to engineering, estimating, design, planning and project management.

Roadways the right way — after 60 years, we are still building not only roads, but skills, confidence, inclusion and local opportunities.
