SOME USEFUL TIPS: HOW TO INVEST IN A NEW DRIVEWAY
A new driveway for your home needs to be fit for purpose, look good and ultimately add value to your property. Sadly we see many people paying out twice in order to get poor workmanship put right.
These are our top tips on how to get it right:
Be suspicious of low prices
Significantly lower prices can be a sign of shortcuts – such as a too-thin layer of asphalt. It might look great on the first day but could crumble away over time. Inadequate preparation under the asphalt and the use of non-certified materials can also cause issues. Weeds, cracks or puddles can all appear a few months down the line. A detailed quote should set out the foundation depth, materials and quantities to be used. It will also state the depth of asphalt that will be laid.
Hire an established, reputable contractor
A high quality contractor will invest in staff training and ensure that a high quality job is delivered. Only asphalt of a certain temperature should be used. In cooler temperatures from autumn through to spring, it should be delivered in insulated vehicles to keep it warm and the temperature should be checked using special tools. A quality installer will not lay asphalt in heavy rain, extreme temperatures or strong winds.
Look out for Health & Safety
If a member of your family or the public gets injured (a trip, slip or worse), via plant, debris or materials used by your builder, you could be held liable. So it’s important to hire a company that has recognised Health & Safety accreditations like CHAS or Constructionline. This gives the assurance that both your safety – and that of the public – will come first.
Driveway surface
There are many driveway surfaces and paving materials to choose from, depending on how you want your drive to look and function:
- Loose materials like gravel or pebbles – good value and environmentally friendly
- Block paving – usually moulded concrete blocks, clay bricks or natural stone
- Concrete and asphalt – low cost, durable and low maintenance
- Resin-bound gravel – combining a gravel appearance with low maintenance and good drainage
